Iranian judoka Javad Mahjoub has put on an outstanding display at the European Open for Men in Austria, and snatched a gold medal at the high-status sporting event.

On Sunday, Mahjoub shone in the minus 100-kilogram weight class in the city of Oberwart, and scooped the top honor.

He prevailed over Austrian Aaron Fara in his first contest, before downing Jalil Shukurov, a representative from Azerbaijan, in the next bout and progressing to the semi-final.

Mahjoub overwhelmed Italian competitor Vincenzo D Arco and booked the ticket for the final showdown, where he conquered Arsen Omarov from Russia and won the gold medal.

Cuban Jose Armentros and Italian Vincenzo D Arco shared the bronze medal.

“These 100 points bring me to a good position. This tournament was so important for me,” Mahjoub said after the final contest.

He added, "The final was really close because we know each other very well. One year ago at the OTC in Sotchi we trained together very often and now we are also friends."

In the minus 81-kilogram weight category, Iran’s Saeed Molaei defeated an opponent from Kazakhstan and received the bronze medal.

Mongolian Uuganbaatar Otgonbaatar overcame his fellow countryman Dagvasuren Nyamsuren in the final competition, and claimed the gold medal.

The European Open for Men started in Oberwart, Austria, on February 13, and finished the next day. The competitions brought together 242 judo practitioners from 48 countries.
