Iranian freestyle wrestlers have picked up three medals at the 2015 Golden Grand Prix Final in the Republic of Azerbaijan.
On Friday and day one of the competitions at the Sarhadchi Sports Complex in Baku, Iran’s two-time junior world champion Iman Sadeghikoukandeh conceded a 2-8 defeat to Haji Aliev, a representative of the host country, in the last encounter of men’s 61-kilogram weight category and got the silver medal.
Sadeghikoukandeh received a bye in the first round. He then beat his Venezuelan opponent Andry Davila 10-0 in his first contest.
He was also dominant in the semi-final, downing Kazakh athlete Daulet Niyazbekov 6-5.
In the 74-kilogram category, Iran’s Mostafa Hosseinkhani won his third-place bout against Turkish rival Soner Demirtas 3-2 to take home a bronze medal.
Ehsan Lashgari also overpowered American wrestler David Taylor 10-0 in the 86-kilogram weight division, and snatched another bronze for the Islamic Republic.
The Final Golden Grand Prix international wrestling tournament, dedicated to late Azeri leader Heydar Aliyev, opened in Baku on November 27 and will conclude on November 29.
More than 400 sportsmen and women from 35 countries are competing in the event.
According to schedule, freestyle wrestlers vied for medals on the first day of the tournament. Female wrestlers are competing on November 28, and Greco-Roman wrestlers will face off the next day.
