Biden is heir to US political tradition of full sympathy for Zionist occupation: Author

The outgoing US president, Joe Biden, is heir to a long-standing American political tradition of unwavering support for the Zionist occupation and its narrative on the Palestinian issue, says a prominent historian and author Abba A. Solomon.

In an interview with the Press TV website, Solomon, an expert on the history of American Jews and Zionism, highlighted how US policy has displayed“certain blindness to the human realities and rights of the Palestinian population.”

Biden’s tenure as president ends in less than two weeks, with Donald Trump poised to return to the White House after defeating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris last month.

The Biden administration has faced severe criticism for backing Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza, which over the past 15 months has claimed nearly 46,000 lives—most of them women and children.

Reflecting on Biden’s foreign policy legacy, Solomon noted his efforts to restore post-World War II alliances disrupted during Trump’s first presidency. However, he pointed out that Biden’s approach to Palestine remained entrenched in the traditional American political stance.

“This is changing in the political consciousness of younger Americans who are more sympathetic to the injuries suffered by the populations of Palestine,” he noted, referring to the growing pro-Palestine sentiment evident from massive demonstrations against the Gaza genocide across the country.

Calls for a ceasefire are intensifying, fueled by public outrage over Washington’s ironclad support for Israel, including an $8 billion arms package recently approved by Biden’s administration.

As Trump prepares to take office, concerns loom about his hardline pro-Zionist agenda, reflected in his cabinet picks, many of them considered close to the powerful Zionist lobby.

Solomon said the new US president, who previously occupied the White House between  2017 and 2021, will likely act in “unpredictable ways.”

“Trump has an approach to foreign policy which involves favors and commercial alliances for him and his circle - instead of traditional conceptions of the national interest,” he told the Press TV website.

“He also has singled out Jewish Americans for criticism as not being "good" Jews if they do not support him or Israel's government. This may threaten the safety and social standing of American Jews.”

The Israeli regime’s pursuit of “total victory” over Palestinian rights and aspirations “in favor of the Jewish state principle,” Solomon noted, undermines prospects for a stable resolution.

“The US foreign policy apparatus has refused to apply US laws that require us to not fund or supply human rights violations or war crimes,” he stated.
