Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid says Baghdad is committed to preventing the Arab nation’s territory from being used as a launch pad for strikes and acts of military aggression against neighboring countries.
Rashid made the remarks on Saturday as he was delivering a speech at a ceremony marking the anniversary of the martyrdom of Ayatollah Sayyed Mohammad Baqir al-Hakim and the “Iraqi Martyr's Day”.
He described Hakim’s loss as a great tragedy but stated that solace lies in uplifting the values that he and other martyrs of freedom sacrificed their lives for i.e. justice, equality, and peace.
The Iraqi president noted that such values point to the abundance of challenges and difficulties Iraq is facing, namely the fight against terrorism and extremism, and the consolidation of social harmony.
Rashid went on to underscore the importance of unity to ensure security and commitment to amicable relations with neighboring countries and peoples.
“We have made dramatic progress; but significant work still remains, especially given the regional circumstances threatening regional countries. We are keen to mitigate their effects through dialogue, understanding, a commitment to counterterrorism, and putting in efforts to ensure security, peace, development, and progress,” the Iraqi president stressed.
Rashid also reiterated Iraq’s support for the Syrian nation amid their ongoing challenges, stressing that Baghdad backs the reconstruction of an independent Syria where the rights of all strata of the society are protected.
He then affirmed Iraq’s support for the Lebanese people, saying, “We continue to assist in alleviating the hardships faced by the Lebanese, and emphasize the importance of uniting various sections of the Lebanese society, and rebuilding cities, villages, and institutions damaged by the Israeli acts of aggression.”
