Two independent United Nations human rights experts have denounced the deadly Israeli attack on the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, saying they were “horrified” by the occupying regime’s raid on the last functioning health center in the besieged enclave.
Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, and Tlaleng Mofokeng, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health, made the remarks in a joint statement on Saturday.
“For well over a year into the genocide, Israel’s blatant assault on the right to health in Gaza and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territory is plumbing new depths of impunity,” the experts said.
They also called for an end to the “blatant assault” on health rights in the Gaza Strip, while reiterating that Israel is committing genocide in the besieged territory.
The experts further expressed grave concern about the detention of the hospital’s director, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, who was forcibly arrested by Israeli forces, calling for his immediate release.
“Yet another doctor to be harassed, kidnapped, and arbitrarily detained by the occupation forces,” they said, adding that “This is part of a pattern by Israel to continuously bombard, destroy, and fully annihilate the realization of the right to health in Gaza.”
On December 28, Israeli forces carried out airstrikes on Kamal Adwan Hospital, with the Gaza Health Ministry saying an estimated 50 people, including medical staff, were killed in the attacks and the rest were abducted by the occupation forces.
Dr. Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, was among those taken for questioning by the Israeli military over alleged links to the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas.
The Israeli regime acknowledged that it raided the area of the hospital and detained at least 240 staffers, claiming that the facility was being used as a “Hamas terror stronghold.”
The whereabouts of Abu Safiya and other hospital staff are unclear.
Israel launched the war on Gaza on October 7, 2023, after Hamas-led resistance groups carried out Operation Al-Aqsa Flood against the occupying entity in response to its intensified violence against Palestinians.
The regime’s bloody onslaught on Gaza has so far killed about 45,700 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured more than 108,000 others. Thousands more are also missing and presumed dead under rubble.
