China “is willing” to bolster bilateral relations with Russia, Chinese President Xi Jinping has told senior Russian security official Dmitry Medvedev, as Beijing and Moscow have significantly strengthened their economic cooperation and diplomatic ties already in recent years in defiance of the West's unilateralism.
On Thursday, Xi made the remark during his meeting with Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, who is in China this week to hold discussions with leaders of Russia’s key strategic partner.
“China is willing to work with Russia to strengthen the alignment of development strategies,” Xi told Medvedev, according to state broadcaster CCTV.
According to the readout, the Chinese leader added that his country hoped to tap into the “driving force of cooperation between the two countries, and continuously benefit the two countries and their peoples.”
China, a major market for the Russian military, and Russia have significantly strengthened their economic cooperation and diplomatic ties in recent years, with their strategic partnership growing even closer following the Ukraine conflict.
Russia and China declared a “no limits” partnership in February 2022, when Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Beijing just days before Moscow launched its military campaign in neighboring Ukraine.
Trade between the two nations hit a record $240 billion last year, as Chinese companies ramped up investments in Russia after Western firms withdrew in response to sanctions imposed on Moscow.
Xi further told Medvedev in Beijing's Great Hall of the People on Thursday that China and Russia “should strengthen communication and cooperation within multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations, the BRICS cooperation mechanism, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization”, as quoted by CCTV.
During their meeting in Beijing in May this year, Xi and Putin agreed to further deepen the “strategic partnership.”
“The parties reiterate their serious concern over the attempts of the United States to disrupt the strategic security balance in the region. The deepening of the comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation entering a new era” said a 7,000-word joint statement issued following their meeting back then.
