Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has condemned in the strongest terms Israel’s strikes on Syria and the creation of a “buffer zone” along the occupied Golan Heights following the fall of President Bashar al-Assad.

“The strikes, the actions in the Golan Heights and the buffer zone hardly contribute to the stabilization of the situation in the already destabilized Syria,” Peskov told a press briefing in Moscow on Wednesday.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also says Israeli action in Syria violates the 1974 treaty between Israel and Syria that ended the 'Yom Kippur' war.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said  Israel's actions did not serve to stabilize the situation in Syria.

Since the fall of the Assad government, the Israeli regime has carried out almost 500 airstrikes across Syria, targeting critical civilian and military infrastructures. The regime has also pushed its forces into a buffer zone in violation of the 1974 disengagement agreement with Syria.

The regime’s military claimed that it struck facilities and that it struck most of the strategic weapons stockpiles in Syria.

The military said the targets included 15 naval vessels, anti-aircraft batteries and weapons production sites in several cities.

Also, reports suggest that weapons depots, navy vessels and a research center have been destroyed.

In Latakia, a navy vessel equipped with machine guns and rocket launchers was seen half sunken in the water.

Israel has also sent troops into a buffer zone east of the occupied Golan Heights. Still, the regime denies advancing towards Damascus, insisting that its forces were stationed within the zone.

Israeli war minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday that the Tel Aviv regime aims to impose a "sterile defense zone" in southern Syria.

Several regional nations have also once again denounced Israel’s incursion into Syrian territory, reaffirming their commitment to protect the Arab country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Peskov said Moscow wanted to see rapid stabilization in Syria.

“We would like to see the situation in the country stabilized somehow as soon as possible,” Peskov said.

He also said Moscow was in contact with the new Syrian leadership over the fate of Russia’s military bases in the Arab country.

“This is necessary since our [military] base and diplomatic mission are there,” Peskov stated.

The Tartus naval base and Hmeimim air base in Syria are Russia’s only military outposts outside the former Soviet Union and have been key to the Kremlin’s activities in Africa and West Asia.
