Iraq resistance strikes ‘vital’ Israeli target as Tel Aviv asks Baghdad to prevent attacks

Frame grab from a video released by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq shows the launch of a drone by the group toward an Israeli military target in the southern occupied territories, November 19, 2024.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq has launched drone attacks on a “vital” Israeli target inside the occupied Palestinian territories, in response to the regime’s genocide in the besieged Gaza Strip and carnage in Lebanon.

In a statement published on its Telegram channel, the umbrella group of anti-terror fighters in the Arab country announced that it had launched the attack in the early hours of Tuesday.

“In continuation of our approach to resisting the occupation, and in support of our people in Palestine and Lebanon, and in response to the massacres committed by the usurping entity against civilians, including children, women and the elderly, the fighters of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq on Tuesday, 19-11-2024, attacked a vital target in the south of the occupied territories using drones,” the resistance group said.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq also vowed to continue “striking the enemy's strongholds with increasing intensity.” It, however, did not provide further details about the drone strikes or the targeted Israeli position.

The Islamic Resistance has carried out hundreds of similar operations since last October, when the Israeli regime launched a genocidal war against the Gaza Strip and significantly escalated its violent actions against Lebanon.

The Tuesday attack came as embattled Tel Aviv called  on the UN Security Council and the Iraqi government to take immediate action to stop and prevent the retaliatory attacks by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq against Israeli targets.

In a letter to the president of the UN Security Council, Israeli foreign minister Gideon Saar acknowledged that the resistance group has launched hundreds of drones of various types and dozens of cruise missiles against targets within the occupied territories since October last year, when the occupying regime began its ongoing genocidal war in Gaza.

The Israeli minister claimed that most of the drones and missiles were intercepted, but stressed that some hit their targets, including explosive-laden drones that stroke an Israeli military base in the northern occupied territories on October 3, killing at least two troopers and injuring 24 others.

The Iraqi group has also attacked US military bases in Iraq and neighboring Syria, denouncing Washington’s support for the occupying regime in its genocidal war against Palestinians.

According to Gaza's Health Ministry, the Palestinian death toll from the Israel genocide has passed 43,900, most of them women and children. Nearly 104,000 others have been injured as well.
