Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian has warned that any Israeli aggression against the country will be met with a "proportional response."

He made the remarks on Tuesday at the Hamas office in Tehran, where he paid tribute to Yahya Sinwar, leader of the Palestinian resistance group, who was martyred in combat with Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip last week.

Asked by reporters about a potential strike by the Zionist regime on Iran, he said, "Any attack will receive its own proportional response."

Since early October 2023, Israel has been waging brutal two-front aggression that has killed at least 42,603 people in the besieged Gaza and 2,483 others in Lebanon, among them several resistance leaders.

While bogged down in the quagmire of the wars, Israel has recently stepped up its threats against Iran amid reports speculating that the occupying regime's targets may be military, oil or nuclear sites in the Islamic Republic.

The Iranian chief executive said that certain powers preach about human rights while they are themselves violating international law and supporting the criminal entity that has displaced people from their homes.

The US and European countries, which have armed Israel, defend every inhumane crime that the regime commits, Pezeshkian added.

He said such countries have been pursuing the policy of “bullying” others, but freedom- and justice-seeking people will not remain silent.

He emphasized, "This is not a war that can be ended by killing people, but it is a war that can be ended by establishing justice and considering all people's [rights], something that is not possible by force and injustice."

'BRICS good opportunity to end US totalitarianism'

Later on Tuesday, the Iranian president left Tehran for Russia's Kazan to attend the 16th annual summit of the BRICS group of countries.

Speaking before his departure, he said Iran's membership of the BRICS and its participation in the bloc's summit provide a good opportunity for the country to strengthen its relationship with the world and end US totalitarianism and unilateralism.

Pezeshkian also said Iran is set to reach “good agreements” in the field of energy, industry, trade and tourism during the summit.

The BRICS group of fast-developing economies initially consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

This year, the group was expanded to include Iran, Egypt, the UAE and Ethiopia as new members.

The bloc, which is often seen as an alternative to the Western economic and political hegemony, comprises almost 46 percent of the global population, 36 percent of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP) and 25 percent of the global trade measured in terms of exports.
