Iran’s president to attend upcoming BRICS summit in Russia: Ambassador

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian

Iran’s ambassador to Russia says the President of the Islamic Republic, Masoud Pezeshkian, will attend the upcoming meeting of the BRICS group of emerging countries, which is scheduled to be held in the Russian city of Kazan next month.

Kazem Jalali made the announcement on Sunday, saying Pezeshkian will also meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin during his trip to Kazan in October.

Russia’s western city of Kazan is set to host the 16th BRICS Summit from October 22 to 24.

Putin has already said he plans to meet and hold talks with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian on the fringes of the event, adding that Russia also expects a separate trip by President Pezeshkian for a joint comprehensive cooperation agreement between the two countries to be signed.

He made the remarks in a meeting with Secretary General of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Ali Akbar Ahmadian on the sidelines of a meeting of BRICS security officials in Russia’s port city of St. Petersburg on Thursday.

The latest development comes amid tensions with the West over allegations that Iran has sent short-range ballistic missiles to Russia to be used in the ongoing war in Ukraine.

On Tuesday, the US Treasury and the State Department imposed sanctions on several individuals and entities based in Iran and Russia over Tehran’s alleged drone and missile sales to Moscow.

Germany, France and the UK also announced they will cancel bilateral air services agreements with Iran and work towards imposing sanctions on the country’s national airliner, Iran Air.

Iran has rejected allegations of supplying ballistic missiles to Russia as baseless and misleading.

Moscow has also rejected US media reports claiming that Iran has sent short-range ballistic missiles to Russia to be used in the war in Ukraine.

Since the war broke out in Ukraine in February 2022, the Islamic Republic has on numerous occasions brushed off the accusations of interfering in the conflict in the realms of providing military equipment and assistance to Russia.
