Iran imposes new departure tax to develop airports

Iran has announced a new departure tax to fund plans to develop airports in the country.

Iran has started levying a new tax on air travelers departing the country to fund its plans to develop and modernize airports.

Secretary of the Association of Iranian Airlines (AIA) Maqsoud Asadi Samani said on Sunday that the new 10-euro departure tax had been imposed as of September 1 on all passengers of domestic and international airlines.

Samani told the state TV’s news website that the new duty is imposed on all passengers above two years of age and will be directly deposited to an account held by Iran’s General Treasury Administration for the purpose of spending on aviation infrastructure development in the country.

He said the price of euro considered for the taxation is the rate used in a government-controlled currency exchange center which is currently more than 540,000 Iranian rials.

Samani added that passengers travelling for pilgrimage to Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Syria are exempt from the tax.

The new departure tax comes on top of a normal duty paid by all passengers leaving Iran which is 520,000 Iranian rials ($8.8) for the year to March 2025.

The number of departures from Iran's international airports is estimated at nearly 5 million per year.

A five-year economic development plan approved by the Iranian parliament stipulates that the country’s transportation ministry should charge a tax of 10 euros on departing air travelers to fund expansion plans at international airports in the country.
