Russia has launched a “counter-terror operation” in western border areas facing Ukraine, after Kiev forces launched an incursion into the region.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Saturday that it had deployed troops to Belgorod, Kursk and Bryansk as a “counter-terror operation” in the region.
It said it had deployed the additional troops and equipment, including tanks, rocket launchers and aviation units to push back the Kiev forces invading the country.
Russia’s defense ministry published footage on Saturday of tank crews firing on Ukrainian positions in the Kursk region, as well as an overnight air strike, after it said Friday it had deployed yet more units to the border region.
It also said it had downed 26 Ukrainian drones that tried to attack the region overnight.
The Kremlin has declared a state of emergency in Kursk.
Ukrainian forces launched the surprise operation into Russian territory this week in what was described as Kiev’s biggest attack on Russia’s soil since the Ukraine war started in February 2022.
Russia’s anti-terrorism committee said Kiev’s troops had wounded civilians and destroyed residential buildings, describing the incursion as a “terrorist attack”.
It said Kiev had launched an “unprecedented attempt to destabilize the situation in a number of regions of our country.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin described the incursion simply as a “large-scale provocation” by the US-backed Ukrainian leadership.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier this week claimed he wanted Moscow to “feel” the consequences of its special military operation in Donbas.
Since February 2022, the West has flooded Ukraine with Western weapons and ammunition to strengthen Kiev forces against Russian troops.
