Iranian taekwondo athlete Mobina Nematzadeh earned a bronze medal in the 49-kg category at the Paris Olympics after defeating Saudi Arabia's Dunya Abutaleb 2-0.
This marks the second medal for Iran at this year's Olympics, and Nematzadeh's achievement makes her only the second Iranian woman to win an Olympic medal in history.
Nematzadeh's road to the podium was impressive. In the round of 16, she dominated her opponent from Lesotho, a two-time African bronze medalist, winning both rounds with scores of 3-0 and 2-0.
In the quarterfinals, she faced Adriana Cerezo Iglesias of Spain, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics silver medalist and 2023 world bronze medalist.
Nematzadeh put on a stellar performance, taking the first period 2-0 and the second period 7-1, securing her place in the semi-finals.
In the semi-finals, Nematzadeh went up against China's Guo Qing. Despite a valiant effort, she was edged out with scores of 4-1 and 6-3, narrowly missing the chance to compete for gold.
Nonetheless, her bronze medal adds to Iran's Olympic success and solidifies her place in the history of Iranian sports.
