China hosts environment conference attended by SCO member countries

A climate and green development conference was held in the Chinese city of Qingdao on Monday attended by representatives of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states.

Dubbed the ‘Green Development Forum of Shanghai Cooperation Organization Countries’, the day-long conference focused on solutions to the climate crisis and the development of green energy.

Officials from all SCO member countries participated in the conference. SCO is a formidable Eurasian political, economic, international security and defense bloc.

Ali Salajegheh, head of Iran’s Department of Environment, represented the Islamic Republic at the conference. In his speech, he highlighted major environmental challenges facing the West Asia region, including the water crisis, drought, and dust storms.

Salajegheh emphasized the necessity of deploying sustainable and nature-friendly strategies to achieve economic growth among the SCO countries.

He further stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran, as a responsible country and member of the SCO bloc, is committed to the protection of the environment.

Head of Iran’s Department of Environment Ali Salajegheh met with Shen Yueyue, Vice-Chairperson of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, who is also the president of the GNFCC (Good-Neighborliness, Friendship, and Cooperation Commission of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization), on July 7, 2024, in Quingdao, China.

Howveer, Salajegheh stressed that cruel sanctions imposed by Western countries against Iran have negatively affected the country’s environment like other sectors.

He added that Iranian youth have taken significant steps in protecting the country’s environment by establishing knowledge-based companies focused on environment protection.

The Iranian official also highlighted the destructive impact of the Israeli genocidal war on Gaza’s environment, where the regime’s bombardments over the past nine months have wreaked havoc.

Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the conference, saying that the SCO member countries have reached a consensus to protect the environment and promote green development.

On the sidelines of the conference, Salajegheh met with Shen Yueyue, Vice-Chairperson of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, who is also the president of the GNFCC (Good-Neighborliness, Friendship, and Cooperation Commission of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization).

Iran was announced as a new permanent member of the SCO in September 2022, following relentless efforts by the Ebrahim Raeisi administration.
