US gun violence: Five killed in North Las Vegas shooting; attacker kills self
A man who fatally shot dead five people and severely injured a 13-year-old girl in North Las Vegas, has taken his own life after being located by police officers.
Eric Adams, 47, took his own life on Tuesday morning when confronted by officers from the North Las Vegas Police Department in a residential area. The police had been searching for Adams since the previous night shootings in different apartment units.
North Las Vegas law enforcement officials were informed on Tuesday morning about the potential location of Adams. Subsequently, officers from the Criminal Apprehension team located him, while he was carrying a firearm as he attempted to escape into the backyard of a residence in that area, according to the police.
Officers began giving him verbal commands to drop the gun but he "ignored those commands and died by suicide,” police said.
The department reported that during their investigation into a shooting incident late Monday at a North Las Vegas apartment, they discovered the bodies of two women, one who was in her early 40s, while the second was in her late 50s.
The police have not revealed a reason for the shootings, labeling it as an "isolated incident."
Medical professionals have expressed concerns regarding the prevalence and growth of gun violence in the US, even comparing gun violence in the US to a disease or epidemic.
On Tuesday, Dr. Vivek Murthy, the US Surgeon General, declared in an advisory that firearm violence is the primary cause of death among children and adolescents in the United States, labeling it as a public health crisis.
The Gun Violence Archive documented that so far in 2024, there have been 8,168 homicides along with 247 mass shootings.
According to Statista, California reported the largest number of homicides to the FBI in 2022, at 2,197 for the year. Texas recorded the second-highest number of murders, with 2,020 for the year.
