Iran’s Constitutional Council, a 12-member election supervisory body, says it had finalized the list of qualified presidential candidates and delivered it to the Interior Ministry.
“Checking for the qualifications of the hopefuls for the presidential vote had ended and a list of qualified candidates was sent to the Interior Ministry,” spokesman Hadi Tahan Nazif said on Sunday.
Iran will vote for a new president on June 28. The election was called after Iran’s President Ebrahim Raeisi lost his life along with seven others on May 19, when a helicopter carrying them crashed into a mountainous area in northwest Iran amid foggy conditions.
The five-day registration for the election concluded on June 3, with 80 candidates putting their names down for the race.
The Constitutional Council is tasked to vet the registered candidates within seven days, with the possibility of extending the period by another five days.
Then, a campaign season will begin ahead of the vote.
Opinion polls show 12% rise in turnout: IRIB chief
Speaking on Sunday, Head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) Peyman Jebelli said surveys show that definitive participation in the presidential election has increased by about 12 percent.
According to Jebelli, definitive non-participation has dropped by almost 20 percent after Raeisi’s martyrdom.
He added that the surveys were conducted less than two weeks apart.
