The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) intelligence forces have arrested an individual in Iran’s northwestern province of Ardabil on charges of directing a disinformation campaign against the Islamic establishment, and manipulation of the public opinion.

The official IRNA news agency said the foreign-based individual, whose identity was not immediately available, had manipulated the minds of ordinary people through a disinformation assault on the Islamic Revolution, spread lies, desecrated the national Iranian flag, participated in anti-Iran rallies aboard and colluded with monarchists against the Islamic Republic.

The report added that the IRGC intelligence forces managed to hoax the counter-revolutionary agent into the country and capture him in Ardabil Province.

He has been handed over to judicial authorities for legal action.

The development comes only a few days after Iranian intelligence forces identified and arrested an individual in the same province on charges of espionage for the Israeli regime’s Mossad spy agency.

The fugitive was wanted by Iran’s Intelligence Ministry, and was captured upon an order from the Prosecutor's Office of Ardabil Province.

According to the Media Bureau of the provincial Prosecutor's Office, the Mossad agent was in close contact with high-profile Israeli intelligence officers through social media, and was gathering critical information for them under the guise of a news editor.

He had traveled to several provinces in the hope of taking refuge there and finally leaving the country, before he was identified and captured during a surprise operation in Ardabil Province.

Mossad reportedly decided to immediately close his user accounts and delete related information once the news about his arrest emerged.
