Iran-Saudi ties

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, have called for the expansion of cooperation between the two countries. At a meeting on the sideline of the UN General Assembly's 78th session, Iran’s top diplomat said Tehran is ready to draw up and sign a comprehensive cooperation agreement with Riyadh. He called for forming a joint economic commission to facilitate bilateral trade. For his part, the Saudi foreign minister said his country is ready to cooperate with Iran in different sectors, including transportation and navy. The two top diplomats expressed satisfaction with the reopening of embassies and the exchange of ambassadors between Tehran and Riyadh. Amir Abdollahian and Bin Farhan met for the first time in early April in Beijing after China brokered a détente that allowed Iran and Saudi Arabia to restore their normal diplomatic relations after some seven years.

Israel political crisis

Tens of thousands of Israelis are back on the streets for the 38th consecutive week to protest against controversial judicial curbs by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's extreme far-right cabinet. Mass protests against the judicial overhaul have been ongoing since it was proposed back in January. Israel's Supreme Court began hearing the first in a series of appeals linked to the plan in August. It set off an unprecedented domestic crisis resulting in public unrest, labor strikes, and mutiny by some members of the regime's military. Critics say the plan removes vital checks on the far-right cabinet’s powers. They say they will continue the protests until the legislation is repealed.

French police brutality

Thousands of demonstrators have gathered in Paris in protest against systemic racism and police brutality. The protest was also held in other cities across France. In Paris, demonstrators called for an end to what they described as the police violence. The protest also saw some clashes between demonstrators and police forces in what French Interior Minister called unacceptable violence. The nationwide protest came almost three months after the point-blank killing of a youth by a policeman that sparked over a week of violent protests in Paris and other cities.
