Young Iranian freestyle wrestlers delivered superlative performances at the 2023 U20 Wrestling World Championships in Jordan and romped home with two gold medals.
On Tuesday, the second day of the competition at the Princess Sumaya bint al-Hassan Hall in the Jordanian capital Amman, Iran's Abolfazl Davoud Babaloo overcame his Ukrainian opponent Ivan Prymachenko 5-0 in the final bout of the 97-kilogram weight category and collected the gold medal.
Deepak Chahal from India defeated Individual Neutral Athlete (AIN) Uladzislau Kazlou 9-8 in the third-place contest and clinched a bronze medal.
American wrestler Camden Neal Mc Danel also trounced Kamil Kurugliyev from Kazakhstan 8-2 to claim the other gold medal in his weight division.
Earlier, Mohammad Reza Asadollah Shakeri of Iran overpowered Jesse Wayne Mendez from the US 5-2 in the 65-kilogram weight class and walked away with a gold medal for his country.
Iranian freestyle wrestler Ali Abbas Rezaei-Aghouzgeleh, however, conceded defeat to his American opponent Meyer Shapiro in the 70-kilogram category 6-11 to settle for a silver medal.
The U20 Wrestling World Championships kicked off in Amman, Jordan on August 14, and will run until August 20, 2023.
