US Air National Guardsman accused of leaking classified documents had been posting “sensitive” information months earlier than previously known, the New York Times reports, after the man was arrested last week and faced criminal charges.
According to the damning report, a user profile matching that of Airman Jack Teixeira began posting covert information on Russia’s war with Ukraine in February 2022, soon after the war started.
The secret intelligence was leaked on a previously undisclosed chat group on the social platform Discord, which was publicly listed on a YouTube channel and was easily accessible.
The report also says that the leaked information included details about Russian and Ukrainian casualties, activities of Moscow’s surveillance agencies, and updates on aid being provided to Ukraine.
The user claimed to be posting information from the US National Security Agency, the Central Intelligence Agency, and other intelligence agencies.
The case is believed to be the most serious US security breach since more than 700,000 documents, videos, and diplomatic cables appeared on the WikiLeaks website in 2010.
The Pentagon has called the leak a "deliberate, criminal act."
One top-secret document said tough Russian defenses and Ukrainian deficiencies in training and munitions supplies will probably exacerbate casualties during offensives by Ukraine.
Another secret document detailed the dire state of Ukrainian air defenses. The document said Kiev’s ability to provide air defenses that protect the front line will be completely reduced by May 23.
The leaked documents also show that the US has been spying on its allies, including Ukraine, Israel, and South Korea.
