At least 30 people died and 15 others were injured after a passenger bus and a car collided and plunged into a deep ravine in northern Pakistan.

The accident took place on the Karakoram Highway in the Kohistan district of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday, reported Geo News.

The passenger bus was on its way from Gilgit to Rawalpindi when it collided with a car coming from the opposite side in the Shitial region.

The Karakorum is a mountain range between India, Pakistan, China, Afghanistan and Tajikistan where the Karakoram Highway - the highest paved international road in the world which passes through Kashmiri parts across the Himalayas and connects Western China and Pakistan - is located.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief and sorrow over the deaths.

Last week, 41 people died after a passenger bus crashed into a pillar and fell off a bridge, catching fire near the town of Bela, in the Lasbela district of Pakistan's Balochistan province.

The bus was carrying 44 passengers, including women and children, from Quetta to Karachi.

Traffic accidents on Pakistan's roads are commonplace and generally happen due to violations of traffic laws and regulations, resulting in the deaths of thousands of passengers every year.
