Germany are out of the tournament despite a dramatic win over Costa Rica, in a match that made history as an all-female officiating team took charge of a men's World Cup game for the first time.
Hansi Flick’s team who needed a win, plus a favor from Spain, completed their part of the bargain, but to no avail as the 4-time champions finished 3rd in the group and were eliminated on goal difference.
They went ahead via Serge Gnabry's 10th-minute header. Costa Rica then turned it around with two second half goals. At that stage, the Caribbean side were going through with Japan, while Spain were heading for the exit.
Germany scored three goals to take Costa Rica out of the picture, but it will be of no consolation as they failed to reach the knockout stage of the tournament for the second time in succession.
