The leader of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, Giorgia Meloni, has become the first female prime minister of the country.
Meloni, 45, and her cabinet took the oath of office on Saturday before President Sergio Mattarella.
Her government is Italy's most right-wing administration since World War II. Meloni's government will include Matteo Salvini's far-right League and the right-of-center Forza Italia of former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.
Both allies are long-time admirers of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Earlier this week a video was released portraying Berlusconi saying that Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky should be held accountable for the conflict in Ukraine.
Meloni, who succeeded economist Mario Draghi, will have to face a series of challenges, including a looming recession, protecting Italians from surging energy bills and reassuring the establishment of new government around her Atlanticist and anti-Putin alignment.
Italians are hoping that the new leader will be able to find a way to resolve the conflict in Ukraine to avoid an imminent energy shortage in the country.
Meanwhile, economists warn of a looming recession if Italians are deprived of Russia's flow of gas.
Numerous protests have been held across the country over the past weeks amidst growing demand for Russian energy.
