Looming global food crisis

The UN chief warns of a looming global food crisis if Western sanctions prevent Russian fertilizers and agricultural products from reaching world markets. Guterres said the UN is working with the US and EU to overcome obstacles to get Russian food and fertilizers out to global markets. He added the world body will try to step up grain exports from Ukraine. Moscow and Kiev signed an UN-brokered deal last month to resume grain exports despite the war in Ukraine and Western sanctions on Russia. Nearly 700,000 tons of Ukrainian grain and agricultural products have left Ukrainian ports this month. Russia and Ukraine accounted for around a third of global wheat exports before the war.

Turkey deadly accidents

In Turkey at least 34 people have been killed and dozens more injured in two separate road accidents. Both accidents happened in places where collisions had taken place shortly before. The first crash involving a bus and an ambulance killed 15 people and injured 31 more on a motorway in Gaziantep province in southeast Turkey. The second deadly accident also happened as the emergency services were attending an earlier incident in Mardin province, also in southeast Turkey. On this occasion, at least 19 people were killed and nearly 30 injured after a truck driver hurtled into pedestrians. Officials say some of those injured are in critical condition.
