Ukrainian warplane strikes Russia’s Bryansk region
Russia has detected an attempt by a Ukrainian warplane to violate its airspace in the southwestern border city of Bryansk, and two projectiles from the fighter jet have also made it through.
Bryansk Region Governor Aleksandr Bogomaz said in a post on his Telegram that local air defense systems prevented the Ukrainian aircraft from entering the Russian territory early on Saturday, but it managed to fire two projectiles, which landed in the village of Zhecha.
"There are no victims," he said, adding that parts of an oil terminal and the surrounding area have suffered minor damage from shock waves.
The governor also attached images of a large shell crater and damaged buildings in his post.
Two months after the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, Moscow has reported several military attacks by Ukrainian forces on Russian regions bordering Ukraine.
The Bryansk region was the scene of the first major Ukrainian attack on Russian soil on April 14, when two Ukrainian helicopters struck the village of Klimovo, injuring six people.
Ukrainian shelling in Bryansk and the neighboring Belgorod and Kursk Regions have intensified since then. They have mainly targeted oil refineries and other infrastructure, but residential areas have also being hit.
Russia’s Defense Ministry has already warned that if such attacks continued, Moscow would target key centers in Ukraine, including those where Western advisers were helping Kiev.
Russia has also urged Western capitals to stop pumping weapons into Ukraine.
On April 7, Ukraine called on NATO to provide Kiev with all the weaponry it needs to fight Russia.
Moscow has repeatedly warned NATO against sending more weapons and troops near Russia, and some NATO members have cautioned that such moves would drastically escalate tensions.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the operation in Ukraine on February 24. The conflict has provoked a unanimous response from Western countries, which have imposed a long list of sanctions on Moscow. Russia says it will halt the operation instantly if Kiev meets Moscow’s list of demands, including never applying to join NATO.
