UK PM’s Kiev trip ‘counterproductive’

Britain has made it’s pro-Ukraine stance clear with the flag of Kiev fluttering atop several government buildings in Whitehall. Yet, it was still surprise when the UK PM popped up alongside President Volodymyr Zelensky for a walk-about in the near deserted streets of the Ukrainian capital.

The mutual political backslapping seemed at odds with the reality of the crisis but Johnson pledged further military support including 120 armored vehicles and anti-ship missile systems.

Back in London, the optics were not as glossy.

Boris Johnson has pledged further support to Kiev in the shape of military hardware and by ramping up the anti-Russia action. It’s also been mentioned that the prime minister might have taken this crisis as an opportunity to bolster his conflict credentials. but what of the voices urging a de-escalation and not adding fuel to this international fire? Well, many argue they won’t be found here, in the corridors of British power.

Britain’s role in the conflict, especially its supply of more armaments, has not brought the results it perhaps hoped.

At the heart of this conflict is a wider issue, one Zelensky reminded Johnson.

Until real diplomacy prevails with Moscow and Kiev thrashing out their regional affairs, publicity tours like the ones undertaken by Britain’s PM will only do so much.
