Gazans rally to support Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails

Palestinians rallied on Monday in front of the Red Cross office in Gaza to drum up support for thousands of prisoners held in Israeli jails.

Their solidarity action comes as around 450 administrative detainees have been refusing to show up for their military court hearings for the third month in a row. Administrative detainees are denied due process and their detention orders can be renewed for indefinite periods of time.

Palestinian prisoners are also subject to torture and psychological pressure by the Israeli prison authorities, including daily raids, and solitary confinement. Currently some five thousand Palestinians are languishing inside Israeli jails including minors and women.

Palestinian prisoners regularly stage hunger strikes in protest against both the administrative detention policy and harsh detention conditions. Prisoners’ advocacy groups have raised the alarm over the inhumane conditions inside Israeli jails.

Experts say Palestinian prisoners will continue to suffer inside Israeli jails as long as the international community keeps turning a blind eye to Tel Aviv's violations of their rights.

Statistics by human rights groups show that the Israeli regime has arrested over one million Palestinians since 1967.
