The secretary general of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, says peace and stability would not prevail in the Arab world until the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict is resolved through the so-called two-state solution.

Speaking at a symposium organized by the Accademia dei Lincei in the Italian capital of Rome on Thursday, Aboul Gheit said the Arab world would not rise up and regain its grandeur unless its longest-running crisis, which is the Palestinian issue, is tackled through the so-called two-state solution.

He highlighted that the world can neither accept nor coexist with an apartheid regime.

The Arab League chief also called for an end to foreign interference in the affairs of Arab countries.

“Arab states must have the ability to create an internal balance without foreign interference. Foreign interference leads to competition and the intervention of outsiders, as we are witnessing the case in Syria, Libya and elsewhere,” Aboul Gheit noted.

He reiterated that “the path to peace is to stop foreign interference,” and that “war represents the failure of diplomacy and dialogue.”

The Palestinian Hamas resistance movement has also called for intensified resistance as the sole way to counter Israeli acts of aggression.

“There is no way to deter the [Israeli] occupation except by more force,” the national relations department of Hamas in the West Bank said in a statement on Wednesday, according to the Palestinian Information Center.

The statement said the strongest response to the Israeli terrorism would be to intensify resistance and inflict heavy losses on Israeli forces during their raids on the Palestinian cities.

The statement also condemned the recent murder of three Palestinians in the occupied West Bank as a “serious” escalation that should be met with intensified resistance.

The statement came as three Palestinians were killed at the hands of Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank on Tuesday.

Israel occupied the West Bank and East al-Quds after the 1967 Middle East war.

Israeli settlements built on Palestinian land are considered illegal under international law.

More than 600,000 Israelis live in over 230 settlements built since the 1967 Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories of the West Bank and East al-Quds.
