Tennis World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev has put an end to the Nick Kyrgios show at this year's Australian Open on Thursday, dumping out the local hope with a clinical 3-sets-to-1 victory in the second round.
Medvedev kept his calm against Kyrgios and a raucous Australian crowd at the Rod Laver Arena to go two sets up. Kyrgios though, did not go down without a fight as he forced a break of serve in the third set to take it 6-4.
But Medvedev, who is the highest-ranked player remaining, following Novak Djokovic's deportation, soon regained control of the 4th with a double break to eventually close out the match with a 6-2 win.
The Russian will next meet 57th-ranked Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands for a place in the third round.
