Iran-P4+1 talks

Iran and the remaining parties to the 2015 deal are holding the second day of the eighth round of talks on the revival of the agreement. Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian says negotiations are heading in the right direction and can succeed IF the other side shows good faith. Tehran says the verifiable removal of US sanctions as well as guarantees that Washington will not abandon the deal again are at the heart of the ongoing discussions. Iran’s top negotiator Ali Bagheri Kani says the two sides do have an agreement in principle, but will now work on practical mechanisms to make that happen. He says the financial and banking sanctions against Iran will also be examined. Bagheri Kani says all the participants have acknowledged the achievements made so far. During the last round Tehran presented two separate proposals on the removal of the US sanctions as well as Iran’s commitments under the JCPOA.

Progress in Iran-P4+1 talks

Russia strikes an optimistic note in the Vienna talks saying an indisputable progress is being observed there. In a tweet the Russian envoy to the negotiations says the working group on nuclear issues has held a useful meeting. Mikhail Ulyanov says sanctions removal is also being actively discussed in informal settings. The European parties to the 2015 deal also said some technical progress had been made in the last round of talks to accommodate Iranian requests. The so-called E-3 said negotiators have weeks and not months to salvage the deal. China also believes the talks have so far produced positive results. Earlier the Chinese envoy said the removal of the US sanctions on Iran is a key issue in the negotiations.

War on Yemen fallout

Germany weighs up imposing tighter controls over its arms exports. The new government says it will stop selling weapons to countries directly involved in a years-long war on Yemen, including Saudi Arabia. The coalition government of Chancellor Olaf Scholz says the plans include advocating for an EU arms control regulation and a national law on arms exports controls. This as new official data show the total value of approved arms exports by Germany rose to a new record this year, climbing past 10-point-25 billion dollars. Germany as well as the US, the UK and France have been the main weapons suppliers to Saudi Arabia and its allies since they launched a devastating war on Yemen in 2015. Human rights activists say the weapons are used against Yemeni civilians. The war has left hundreds of thousands of Yemenis dead and millions more displaced.
