Iran describes features of 'good agreement' that Vienna talks could yield

Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian

Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian describes features of a "good agreement" that could come about during fresh talks between Iran and the signatories of the 2015 nuclear deal between the Islamic Republic and others.

Such an agreement has to ensure that "the opposite side would return to its complete obligations under the JCPOA," the senior diplomat said on Monday, speaking to the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the phone.

The foreign minister was referring to the nuclear deal by the acronym of its official name--the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

The United States left the JCPOA in 2018, and returned the inhumane and illegal sanctions that the deal had lifted. The UK, France, and Germany were quick to bow under Washington's pressure and start to toe the sanction line closely.

Earlier on Monday, the Austrian capital started to host a seventh round of talks between Iran and the JCPOA's remaining signatories with the aim of examining the potential of the sanctions removal.

If the Western allies resumed their obligations, "Iran too will stop its remedial measures," Amir-Abdollahian added.

In 2019, and after a year of strategic patients, Iran began a set of nuclear countermeasures that went beyond the country's obligations under the JCPOA. Iran's countersteps fit well within the JCPOA's provisions that allow any given signatory to retaliate for others' non-commitment.

The foreign minister also noted that a good agreement that could be hammered out in Vienna had to be "effectively verifiable" too.

Iran serious about 'good agreement'

"Despite the US and the European trio's non-commitment and inaction, Iran has entered the Vienna talks in good faith and with seriousness, and is striving towards realization of a good agreement," he added.

The UN chief, for his part, welcomed resumption of the negotiations, and expressed support on the part of the world body for the JCPOA's revival.

He hoped that the talks would bear fruit, and considered Iran's demand for verifiable removal of the sanctions to be rational.
