New Delhi residents struggle with worsening pollution

New Delhi residents on Friday (November 19) struggled with breathing problems as high pollution levels continued in the Indian capital.

"Nobody knows that (if) this is winter or this is because of the smog that we are not feeling the sun," New Delhi resident Aisha said. "It is a gas chamber."

The city of 20 million was the world's most polluted capital for the third straight year in 2020, according to IQAir, a Swiss group, and air quality has hit hazardous levels there and in other parts of northern India this month. The local government has launched a series of measures such as shutting five power stations, extending school closures and appealing to vehicles to switch off their engines at traffic stops in a bid to contain the crisis.

On most days, the Air Quality Index (AQI) has stayed above 451 on a scale of 500, indicating "very poor" and "severe" conditions that affect even healthy people and seriously impact those with existing diseases, according to the federal pollution control board's guidance.
