Iran insists global energy decisions must be depoliticized
Iran’s Oil Minister Javad Owji has called for depoliticizing of energy decisions around the world as he insists that US sanctions on Iran continue to affect the global supply of energy.
Owji said on Tuesday that soaring gas prices in Europe and elsewhere in the world are partly a result of politicized way of dealing with major energy suppliers, including Iran, in recent years.
He made the comments while addressing a ministerial meeting of Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) in Bolivia.
“In order to overcome challenges of the world energy security; rather than adopting political approaches and imposing unilateral sanctions, a substantial strategy is required to restore economic logic and multilateralism,” read part of Owji speech published by the Oil Ministry’s news service Shana.
The minister said that US sanctions on Iran, as one of the world’s largest holders and producers of natural gas, was against the international law. He argued that the policy had led to reduced global cooperation on critical issues related to energy, including efforts meant to tackle climate change.
Owji, who took office as Iran’s oil minister only in August, vowed in his first address to the GECF that he would do his best in the upcoming years to secure the interests of the bloc’s members in the global gas markets.
He said Iran’s new administration will be committed to goals and standards set by the Forum, including the need for cooperation on price and production issues.
