Students at some of Beirut’s largest universities have rallied across the Lebanese capital to express their support for the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, as the death toll from Israel’s genocidal war soars.
The students gathered on the campus of Lebanese American University in Beirut on Monday, waving a giant Palestinian flag.
They chanted slogans in support of Gaza and decrying Israel’s atrocities.
"We came to the university today to stand in solidarity with our people in Gaza after the massacres that the Israeli occupation has committed against our people in Gaza, including crimes and fires. They are burning them alive,” said Lara Kassem, one of the demonstrators.
“As students, we cannot make a change, but we stand for them today to show the whole world that we have not forgotten them. We are with them, we are with the truth, and the truth is with Gaza," she added.
Yasmine Zein El Din, another student, noted that the protesters are trying to “do a revolution here.”
"We're trying to help the people in Gaza. We're trying to do whatever we can to help—any resources, any funding, any food, anything because they're very strong people and they've been through a lot. And no one can go through what they're going through.”
“We don't understand fully what's happening and how they're feeling, but we mourn for them and we feel with them. So we're trying to help in any way we can as students," she added.
The protest came as the Palestinian national and Islamic forces called for a general strike on Monday in protest against Israel’s war. People in several countries, including Jordan, Turkey, and Bangladesh, joined the global day of action.
Israel launched the campaign of genocide in Gaza on October 7, 2023. It has killed more than 50,700 Palestinians there so far.
In January, the Israeli regime was forced to agree to a ceasefire deal with Hamas given the regime’s failure to achieve any of its objectives, including the “elimination” of the Palestinian resistance movement or the release of captives.
The 42-day stage of the truce, which was marred by repeated Israeli violations, expired on March 1, but Israel is refraining from stepping into talks for the second stage of the agreement.
Last month, Netanyahu resumed the war on Gaza, breaking the two-month ceasefire.
