Saudi Yemen blockade

Yemen’s Petroleum Company has slammed Saudi Arabia for its refusal to allow three ships carrying fuel to dock in Hudaydah port. In a statement, the company says the Saudi-led coalition seized the tankers nearly three months ago, despite the vessels having secured UN clearance for sailing in international waters. It says the country is in need of fuel to continue its public services. Yemen has been mired in war and blockade imposed by Saudi Arabia since 2015. The war has killed tens of thousands of people and has destroyed its vital infrastructure. The UN says more than 24 million Yemenis are in dire need of humanitarian aid, calling the situation there the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

Iraq violence probe

Iraq’s prime minister has ordered an investigation into the violence which erupted during Friday’s protests against parliamentary election results. Mustafa al-Kadhimi announced the formation of a committee to look into clashes during demonstrations in Baghdad. The committee will try to uncover the circumstances surrounding the deaths and injuries of protesters as well as security forces. Meanwhile, senior Iraqi cleric Muqtada al-Sadr said the people should hold street protests against the election results in a peaceful manner. In a tweet, he noted that such rallies should not lead to violence and the humiliation of the government. Iraqis have held several rallies against the vote outcome that initially put the Sadr bloc in the lead. Iraq’s Fatah Alliance said international observers recorded numerous violations during the voting process and counting. The Federal Court is yet to certify the final results.

London clashes

An anti-establishment demonstration has turned violent in the British capital, with police clashing with protesters in central London. At least eight officers were injured during scuffles in the Parliament Square. The Metropolitan police said 12 people were arrested. Demonstrators wearing masks had gathered at nearby Trafalgar Square, with some throwing Molotov cocktails at the officers. They also burnt effigy of Prime Minister Boris Johnson in show of anger at his policies. November fifth marks an annual Million Mask March which draws massive rallies against government overreach, income inequality, and more recently, Covid-19 restrictions.
