President Ebrahim Raeisi has congratulated the national Iranian junior freestyle wrestling team on being crowned as the champion of the 2021 Junior World Championships in Russia and praised them for featuring remarkable displays of grappling skills at the international sports event.
"Congratulations on zealous athletes of the national Iranian junior freestyle wrestling team, who proudly hoisted Iran’s flag besides a black mourning flag to express their passion and faithfulness to Imam Hussein (AS) – the third Shia Imam and the grandson of Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon Him)," Raeisi wrote in a message published on Thursday.
The young Iranian sportsmen notched 178 points to stand atop the podium by a wide margin in the team division of the tournament in the western Russian city of Ufa. They received five gold, one silver and one bronze medals.
They were followed by representatives from the host country, who gained 142 points to claim the second spot.
Wrestlers from the United States and Azerbaijan sat in the third and fourth places with 129 and 122 points respectively.
Rahman Amouzad Khalili thumped Ravinder of India 9-3, and grabbed a gold medal in the 61-kilogram class.
Erfan Elahi defeated Dzhabrail Gadzhiev from Azerbaijan 7-5 in the last contest of the 70-kilogram weight division, and pocketed the gold medal.
Mohammad Nokhodi claimed the gold medal in the 79-kilogram class after defeating Azerbaijani opponent Ashraf Ashirov 7-5.
In the 86-kilogram weight class, Amirhossein Firouzpour overwhelmed Rakhim Magamadov from France 10-0 and claimed the gold medal.
Mahdi Hajilouei lost to American rival Rocky Elam 2-4 in the final bout of the 92-kilogram weight category, and received the silver medal.
Moreover, Iranian junior wrestler Alireza Abdollahi bagged a bronze medal in the 97-kilogram category after defeating Radu Lefter from Macedonia 5-4.
The World Junior Wrestling Championships kicked off on August 16, and will run through August 22, 2021.
