Turkey’s climate impact

There are two rivers in West Asia that could affect the destiny of a number of countries in one way or another: they are called the Tigris and Euphrates. But how is that possible?

That is what we will be covering in todays program, in particular, how Turkey is manipulating the water of these two rivers for both its own political and economic advantage. The Tigris and Euphrates. Turkey has reduced water from these two bodies of water, impacting the land and agriculture of the surrounding countries, like Syria and Iraq.

The water crisis is threatening the lives of many Syrians and Iraqis. And Turkey has reduced the water levels of the Tigris and Euphrates to Syria and Iraq to suit its own water crisis. But the root cause of the dwindling flow of the Tigris and the Euphrates is Turkey’s Southeastern Anatolia Project, known as GAP.

It is a series of dams that Turkey has constructed along the two rivers. The aim: to double the amount of farmland land in the Anatolia region and generating hydroelectric power. The dams must be filled annually, especially when there is a shortage of water. Yet Turkey is using the majority of the water from both rivers, at the expense of Syria and Iraq.
