Russia sent several infantry fighting vehicles to its military base in Tajikistan, close to the Afghan border, the Russian defense ministry said on Thursday.

In a video released by the defense ministry, one of the vehicles is seen unloaded from the aircraft and getting ready for transportation.

Taliban fighters have made major advances in Afghanistan as US forces pull out after 20 years of war, a security headache for Moscow.

Russian tanks deployed near the Afghan-Tajik border on Tuesday ahead of military exercises next month and Moscow announced more drills in neighboring Uzbekistan as regional tensions over the Taliban's territorial gains remained high.
