White House supports 9/11-style probe into Capitol protest

The administration of US President Joe Biden has thrown its support behind a 9/11-style Commission to investigate a breach of the Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump.

The White House released a statement of administrative policy on Tuesday, backing the effort initiated at Congress.

It called the Capitol breach “an unprecedented assault on our democracy, an effort to undo the will of the American people and threaten the peaceful transition of power.”

Supporters of the former president stormed the premises in the hope of preventing lawmakers from certifying Biden's victory, thus overturning the outcome of the 2020 presidential election but to no avail.

“While the federal government has already begun taking action to improve the safety and security of the US Capitol, the administration supports the proposed bipartisan, independent national commission to study and investigate the facts and circumstances surrounding the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol,” the statement read.

Trump has been blamed for inciting his supporters, including members of Proud Boys, to storm the US Capitol building.

“The nation deserves such a full and fair accounting to prevent future violence and strengthen the security and resilience of our democratic institutions,” the White House wrote.

This is while House Republican leader, Kevin McCarthy,  has said that he won’t support the legislation.

“The presence of this political violence in American society cannot be tolerated and it cannot be overlooked,” the California lawmakers said in a statement.

Trump and his supporters keep alleging that the 2020 presidential race was a stolen, calling it “the big lie.”
