Cheney warns GOPers against joining Trump’s 'crusade’

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.)

The chair of the House Republican Conference has warned her fellow GOP members against joining former US President Donald Trump’s "crusade" to undermine the US democracy.

“Every one of us who has sworn the oath must act to prevent the unraveling of our democracy. This is not about policy. This is not about partisanship. This is about our duty as Americans," Liz Cheney said in a fiery floor speech on the eve of her expected ouster from House GOP leadership.

She also reiterated that Donald Trump’s insistence on his previous positions regarding questioning the legitimately of the US President Joe Biden’s victory would endanger the country’s democratic processes.

"Remaining silent and ignoring the lie emboldens the liar," Cheney noted. "I will not participate in that. I will not sit back and watch in silence while others lead our party down a path that abandons the rule of law, and joins the former president's crusade to undermine our democracy."

She further warned that Trump's actions threatened more violence like the Jan. 6 insurrection.

"Today, we face a threat America has never seen before. A former president who provoked a violent attack on this Capitol in an effort to steal the election has resumed his aggressive effort to convince Americans that the election was stolen from him," Cheney said. "He risks inciting further violence."

Cheney, the daughter of former US Vice President Dick Cheney (2001-2009), was among ten House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for inciting insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, when the supporters of the former president broke into the Capitol to stop Congress from certifying Biden's victory.

Much to the chagrin of her fellow Republicans, she has continued to criticize Trump for repeating claims of his election loss to Biden due to fraud, while calling on party members to reject his claims.
