British troops practice urban combat on 'Rock of Gibraltar'

The UK Army holds military exercises in the urban residential areas of Gibraltar.

UK Household Cavalry Regiment has recently returned from a military exercise in Gibraltar, according to a British Army statement.

The Regiment has been exercising in ‘Rock of Gibraltar’ as a part of UK Future Soldier transformation plan.

The Military facilities in Gibraltar are utilized by the British troops for their own benefit, in order to practice “Close Quarter Battle,” to simulate “operations in built-up areas” and develop “tunnel fighting tactics.”

According to the British General, Stephen Carr-Smith, “the facilities they have here on the Rock, particularly the tunnel system, which I don’t think you can recreate in the UK, is really unique. So we’ve come here to practice our close quarter battle skills in tunneled environments.”

UK military considers trainings in Gibraltar “an opportunity to test, develop and enhance frontline skills [of the soldiers] in a new urban environment.”

Gibraltar has long been a hub for UK military trainings and its urban combat practice, maneuvering on the streets of Gibraltar and developing the operational skills of British soldiers even in the residential areas.

Apart from recent military exercises, the Royal Navy is set to base two patrol boats of HMS Dagger and HMS Cutlass -two newly named warships- fitted for heavy machine guns, in Gibraltar in the coming weeks.

This comes months after Spain’s far-right Vox party demanded their country “liberate” the Rock from British “colonial rule.”

In spite of UK government’s challenges with Spain over Gibraltar, the UK army is still busy with deploying new warships, and military operations in Gibraltar.
