Iran’s daily gas use hits new high of 874 mcm

Iran reports a new high in its natural gas consumption amid rising demand for heating.

Iran’s state gas company the NIGC says natural gas consumption in the country has hit a new record amid a colder-than-normal winter that has pushed up demand for heating.

The National Iranian Gas Company said on Monday that gas consumption in the country had reached a total of 874 million cubic meters (mcm) in the past 24 hours, up 12% compared to the same day last year.

It said that households, businesses, and small industries had been responsible for 616 mcm, or 70% of the demand for gas in Iran over the period.

The previous record for daily natural gas usage in Iran was 872 mcm, according to NIGC’s CEO Saeid Tavakkoli.

Tavakkoli said over the weekend that the company had supplied more gas to Iran’s nationwide pipeline network this winter than it was required to under government directives.

He said that the use of turbo compressors had enabled the increased supply of gas to customers this year.

Iran is the fourth largest consumer of natural gas in the world after the US, Russia, and China. The country is also the world’s third-largest gas producer.

Gas usage in Iran has experienced new records this year due to an early cold spell.

The rising demand for heating has caused authorities to restrict flows to industries and power plants, leading to brief periods of electricity shortage across the country.

The NIGC had reported a total gas demand of 794 mcm on November 12 when the cold spell began.
