Iran is marking the 42nd anniversary of the establishment of the Islamic Republic. Here is a report on a flag raising ceremony that marks the national occasion in the capital Tehran.

The Iranian flag was flown high on a day that changed the course of history in the country. April 1, 1979 was the day when more than 98 percent of Iranians voted yes to the Islamic Republic during a nationwide referendum on a new political system after the Islamic Revolution toppled the former Pahlavi regime.

People who went to polls in 1979 sought to establish a new political system that was based on independence and Islamic values.

Led by Imam Khomeini, the Islamic Revolution was driven by anti-imperialist sentiments, since former Iranian monarch Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was heavily dependent on Western powers, especially the US.

Since its establishment in 1979, the Islamic Republic has faced many challenges. From the Western-funded Iraqi war against Iran less than a year after its establishment, to the all-out sanctions imposed against the country by the US and Europe.

Authorities of the Islamic Republic say the Islamic establishment has reached maturity in its fourth decade of life, and will not surrender to Western pressures.

Iranian officials believe the ideals of the Islamic Republic have no expiry date. They say after four decades, the US is still seeking to deal a blow to the system, but such attempts have failed in the face of resistance by Iranians. Officials view this resistance as a seal of approval to the Islamic Republic.
