Carcinogen found in hand sanitizers sold in US

Several famous brands of hand sanitizers produced by the US companies contain high levels of a chemical known to cause cancer, a testing firm says.

According to an analysis conducted by a Connecticut-based online pharmacy, Valisure, some of these hand cleaners contain remarkable levels of benzene.

Artnaturals, Scentsational Soaps and Candles Inc. are among the most contaminated brands.

“Valisure analyzed 260 unique batches from 168 brands … 44 batches (17%) contain benzene at 0.1 ppm or above and 21 batches (8%), which include both liquid and gel formulations, contain benzene at 2 ppm or above,” the pharmacy said in a statement on Wednesday.

The highest level of benzene detected was 16.1 ppm, which is over eight times the interim limit temporarily set by the FDA for liquid hand sanitizers, the statement added.

“These findings are alarming and reveal a serious potential risk to public health,” it noted.

The analysis by Valisure comes as the United States, which has reported almost 30 million cases of coronavirus so far, the highest in the world, is heading toward a fourth wave of the coronavirus.

According to data released by John Hopkins University, more than half of US states have seen a surge in new cases in the last two weeks.

The previous US administration headed by Donald Trump had faced blistering criticism for failing to handle the pandemic, allowing the cataclysmic virus to overwhelm the country’s healthcare system.

The new administration, while announcing several measures to contain the further spread of the virus, has looked clueless so far, even as new infections and deaths pile up.
