Myanmar lawmakers hold symbolic parliamentary session in show of defiance against coup

National League for Democracy (NLD) lawmakers gather to sign a parliamentarian pledge of oath at the Si Bin government residence in the capital Naypyitaw after a military coup blocked the opening of a parliament session earlier in the week.

Military ruler General Min Aung Hlaing was moving quickly to consolidate his hold on power following the overthrow of the country's leader Aung San Suu Kyi and the detention of her and allied politicians on Monday.

In a show of defiance to the generals, about a dozen of the lawmakers elected in a November 8 ballot convened a symbolic parliamentary session in the quarters where they have been staying since the takeover.

Small protests took place in the main city of Yangon where local residents stood out on the streets to clap for the lawmakers as the sound of car horns blaring could be heard.

The army seized power on Monday, alleging irregularities in the election. The move was condemned by the United Nations and Western governments, who called on the junta to respect Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy's victory.
