The US presidential elections have become a laughing stock for the rest of the world, a former American Senate foreign policy analyst says.
Former National Security advisor General Michael Flynn has suggested that outgoing US President Donald Trump could use the military to force an election “rerun” in battleground states, saying such measure is “not unprecedented.”
Flynn made the comment during an interview with Newsmax on Thursday, suggesting Trump should invoke martial law to prevent President-elect Joe Biden from taking office next month.
“There is no way in the world we are going to be able to move forward as a nation. [Trump] could immediately, on his order, seize every single one of these [voting] machines,” the former presidential aide said in apparent reference to the theory that voting software had been hacked to flip Trump’s votes for Biden.
“Within the swing states, if he wanted to, he could take military capabilities, and he could place those in states and basically rerun an election in each of those states,” he added.
James Jatras, a former Senate foreign policy adviser in Washington, told Press TV on Friday that “the idea as voiced by General Michael Flynn that there would be some kind of a military seizure of the election apparatus and rerunning of the election is simply something that is not going to happen.”
“Let's be clear during his time in office Trump has not been able to get the executive branch of the government even to do the ordinary phones under the presidential power that he should be able to order them to do,” he stated.
“The idea that he can order the military to take extraordinary action to seize control of an election and rerun it and the courts have declined to even hear his cases, I think it is highly, highly improbable,” he said.
“I think it were done. I think first of all he would fail and nobody would carry out his orders. But if somehow some move were made in that direction I think we would see a huge explosion in this country. But it could be happening in any way,” he said.
“So at this point there really is nothing one can say about the future integrity of American elections. That these elections should be a laughing stock for the rest of the world. And we will not have a legitimate president Joe Biden that takes the Oval Office. And that's just the way the things are right now,” he concluded.
