Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mekdad has condemned the assassination of Iranian nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, saying the Islamic Republic is capable of confronting such terrorist crimes led by the Israeli regime.

In a Saturday meeting with Iran's Ambassador to Damascus Javad Torkabadi, the Syrian minister warned that such crimes would have impacts on the entire world because they are not just an act of assassination but rather a terrorist move that the international community must condemn, Syrian state news agency SANA reported.

He urged the United Nations to fulfill its responsibilities vis-à-vis the fight against terrorism and adherence to the rules of international law, otherwise there will be more tension in the region.

Mekdad said Syria would stand by Iran in the face of desperate attempts to undermine its progress and scientific and national capabilities.

Fakhrizadeh, who headed the Iranian Defense Ministry’s Organization of Defensive Innovation and Research (SPND), was targeted on Friday in a multi-pronged attack involving at least one explosion and small fire by a number of assailants in Absard city of Damavand County, Tehran Province.

In a tweet on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said the international community should condemn state terrorism and build a consensus to counter tension and adventurism in the region.

In his tweet, the top Iranian diplomat said terrorists have assassinated another prominent scientist of the country and added that such a cowardly act of terror is a clear violation of international rules and moral and humanitarian principles.

For his part, Torkabadi said Iran will not stand idly by in the face of heinous terrorist crimes.

The Iranian diplomat also expressed his country’s determination to strengthen relations and strategic cooperation with Syria in various fields in order to prepare the ground for both Tehran and Damascus to face common challenges.

During the meeting, the Syrian minister and the Iranian diplomat discussed ways to promote mutual relations and the latest developments in the regional and international arenas.

Both sides agreed to continue coordination and consultation between Syria and Iran on various developments and events.
