China rejects UK media report of seizing territory from Nepal

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin

China has rejected a UK-based media report accusing Beijing of seizing territory from neighboring Nepal as “completely unfounded.”

During a regular press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin dismissed the report by Daily Telegraph earlier in day citing Nepalese politicians as saying that China had annexed more than 150 hectares from the small Himalayan nation bordering Tibet.

The British daily alleged that China took over the Nepalese territory months after violent clashes between Indian and Chinese forces in eastern Ladakh.

The daily further alleged that Chinese troops had crossed the border into the Limi Valley and Hilsa in the north-western district of Humla and subsequently built military structures on the encroached territory in Nepal’s Gorkha district.

China seized control over Tibet in 1950 in what it then describes as a “peaceful liberation.”

The development came days after Chinese leaders called for “self-reliance” to counter American moves to hamper the world’s second-largest economy during an annual planning meeting of China’s ruling Communist Party.

Beijing also last week blasted US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s “Cold War mentality” for repeatedly referring to what he described as a China threat during a recent Asian tour.
