The latest report on the exploitation of immigrants on farms in Italy was presented in Rome. According to the study about 180,000 migrant workers are particularly susceptible to falling prey to such exploitation.
A new report by trade union CGIL-FLAI on migrant exploitation in the agrifood supply chain was presented in the Italian capital on Friday. The report takes a snapshot of the illegal, but well-established, practice known in Italy as "caporalato" in the period 2018-2020.
Under the caporalato system, some 180,000 migrants illegally work long hours for wages well below the national minimum and are often subjected to violence.
In May this year, the government introduced a new legislation aimed to temporarily regularize undocumented migrants working in the agricultural sector to fill key jobs and allow workers health coverage amid the coronavirus pandemic. As a result about 210,000 migrant
workers have been granted temporary residence so far.
About a year ago the United Nations urged Italy to do more to prevent the exploitation of migrant farm workers and to dismantle the illegal labor system known as "caporalato." However, despite the fact that concrete steps have been taken, the current situation remains critical.
