US ethic groups call for Barr’s impeachment over supporting Trump reelection

Two private groups of US lawyers have called for the impeachment of Attorney General William Barr, accusing him of misusing his office to support President Donald Trump's reelection campaign.

The lawyers alleged that Barr has an "authoritarian worldview" that "makes him see himself as entitled to ignore laws, ethics, and historical practices" as the attorney general.

The groups — the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Ethics and the Rule of Law and the Washington-based Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics —wrote in a 267-page research paper on Monday that Barr could not be trusted.

They said that the attorney general could not be trusted to represent the work of his department accurately and that there were problems with the truthfulness of his public statements.

US Attorney General William Barr has accused the Democratic Party of wanting to tear down the system.

According to the research paper, Barr’s “authoritarian worldview limits the degree to which ... (he) regards himself as bound by the rule of law.”

The authors of the report, some of whom held top legal and ethics posts in previous administrations, called on the House of Representatives to begin a formal impeachment inquiry.

This is not the first time Barr has faced calls to be impeached for violations of the law.

Earlier this month, 1,600 former Justice Department officials accused Barr, in an open letter, of using the justice department to support Trump’s re-election campaign.

The letter said that “Barr is using the powers of the Department as a vehicle for supporting the political objectives of President Donald Trump.”

“It appears that the Department has transitioned from one that is subject to law, to become one that instead views the application of law as politically discretionary; moving from rule of law to rule by law,” the letter read.

Barr has dismissed the allegations, though he has repeatedly echoed Trump’s election-related allegations.

As the latest move to support Trump’s campaign, the Justice Department has recently advised prosecutors they could publicize investigations into election issues, including alleged ballot fraud.

This is while, the department has traditionally kept live investigations under wraps.

"Shame on you," scolded House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-NY, who led the contentious, daylong hearing.

The president has repeatedly tacked the integrity of the election, and refused to commit to a peaceful transition of power, if loses the race to his Democratic rival Joe Biden.

He has also cast doubt on mail voting, claiming that mail-in ballots lead to mass voter fraud.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic millions of Americans prefer not to vote in person in November 3 presidential elections.

At least in nine states, every registered voter will automatically be mailed an application to request an absentee ballot.
